At St. John the Baptist Catholic School, we use a variety of assessments to understand student learning, guide instruction, and ensure every child is growing academically, spiritually, and socially. Our approach combines classroom-based evaluations with nationally recognized and state-required assessments to provide a complete picture of student progress. The following tools help us support each child’s learning journey:
St. John the Baptist Catholic School, along with all other Archdiocese of Milwaukee Catholic Schools uses Standards-Based Assessment. Standards-Based Assessments are used throughout the school year to measure student mastery of specific grade-level skills in core subject areas. Instead of relying solely on traditional letter grades, teachers evaluate how well each student demonstrates understanding of clearly defined learning standards. This approach allows teachers to give meaningful feedback, target instruction, and help students recognize their own growth. Standards-based reporting also supports consistent, transparent communication with families about student progress.
MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Assessments
Students in select grade levels participate in MAP Growth assessments, which are nationally normed, computer-based tests in reading and mathematics. MAP tests adapt to each student’s performance level, providing a personalized measure of academic growth over time. Results help teachers identify strengths, address areas needing support, and design instruction that meets the needs of each learner. MAP scores also allow the school to monitor progress from fall to spring and ensure students are on track for long-term success.
Wisconsin Forward Exam
As required by the state of Wisconsin, students in designated grades take the Wisconsin Forward Exam each spring. This assessment measures proficiency in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, depending on the grade level. The Forward Exam provides valuable data on how our students are performing relative to state standards and helps us evaluate the effectiveness of our curriculum. Results guide school-wide planning and enrich our commitment to continuous improvement.
